How to Wear the Retro Hair Trend

Fashion may be having a very masculine moment, but this fall the beauty world is looking back to the über-feminine '40s and '50s for hair inspiration.

Ladylike waves, pompadours, and buns emerged on the Fall 2010 runways of Fendi, Barbara Tfank, The Blonds, Chloé, and Mulberry. And scene-stealers like Naomi CampbellKate Bosworth, and Beyoncéhave all put a fresh twist on these retro hairstyles.

"Influential runway shows for the fall like Prada and Louis Vuitton had a very 1950s shape to the silhouettes. They had some models who are older and some models who are bustier. People look to those shows for direction and that style gets picked up on," says Guido PalauRedken Creative Consultant. "It was almost more surprising to see this kind of hair and not something conceptual or undone. It showed another kind of woman. It shows that style is ageless."

Reeling with excitement from the contemporary takes on these retro 'dos, StyleList tasked celebrity hairstylist George Ortiz to perfect '40s-era waves on a real woman -- namely, Amber Greviskes, assistant editor at AOL Health.

"The modern-day version is a bit less structured with a touch of flirtiness," says Ortiz, "and it no longer takes hours to recreate."

To fashion this hairstyle, Ortiz uses three styling tools: a medium size curling iron, hair clips, and hairspray. Start by creating a side part and spray each section of hair before curling with a hairspray like Redken Workforce 09 Flexible Volumizing Spray to add body and prevent frizz.

He then secures each curl to the scalp using hair clips. "By curling and pinning your hair until it's cooled you will have a much stronger curl to work with."

Once you've worked your way around the entire head, release the curls. With a fine-toothed comb simply create an "S" wave formation. Set the curl pattern by clipping and spray to maintain a soft and sexy style. Finish with a touch of polish by spritzing on a light shine mist or super strength finishing spray like Redken Forceful 23 to give curls hold and lockout humidity, recommends Palau.

Pair your luxe waves with menswear-inspired pieces like a tailored suit jacket, trousers, and platform oxford booties -- adding a feminine flair to the boy-meets-girl fall fashion trend. And if you're headed out for a night on the town, make a statement by smoothing on bold lipstick.
