Paris Fashion Week highlights: Dries Van Noten

It was a mashup of feminine simplicity and masculine tailoring on the Dries Van Noten SS2011 catwalk yesterday in Paris. The show was a textile lover’s dream as the models floated down the runway in a mix of peachy and periwinkle silks, Asian-inspired cherry blossom prints, sheer dip-dyed fabrics layered over smart shirts and – mm – some particularly yummy-looking velvet.
The Belgian fashion house had all bases covered when it came to little dresses and separates; flowing high-waisted silk trousers and jumpsuits, sweet above-the-knee skirts, sharp little utilitarian shirts perfect for work and probably themost gorgeous black velvet trouser suit ever made. There was a clear oriental inspiration behind the collection that could be seen in the white silk kimono dress and sparkly kimono jacket, perfect for the evenings. With celebrities in LA like Cat Deeley and Nicole Richie already sporting vintage kimono jackets, I can predict these will be high in demand next year.
Dries Van Noten have got serious game this Fashion Week. Check the images below so that you can get coveting, just like us.

How to Wear the Retro Hair Trend

Fashion may be having a very masculine moment, but this fall the beauty world is looking back to the über-feminine '40s and '50s for hair inspiration.

Ladylike waves, pompadours, and buns emerged on the Fall 2010 runways of Fendi, Barbara Tfank, The Blonds, Chloé, and Mulberry. And scene-stealers like Naomi CampbellKate Bosworth, and Beyoncéhave all put a fresh twist on these retro hairstyles.

"Influential runway shows for the fall like Prada and Louis Vuitton had a very 1950s shape to the silhouettes. They had some models who are older and some models who are bustier. People look to those shows for direction and that style gets picked up on," says Guido PalauRedken Creative Consultant. "It was almost more surprising to see this kind of hair and not something conceptual or undone. It showed another kind of woman. It shows that style is ageless."

Reeling with excitement from the contemporary takes on these retro 'dos, StyleList tasked celebrity hairstylist George Ortiz to perfect '40s-era waves on a real woman -- namely, Amber Greviskes, assistant editor at AOL Health.

"The modern-day version is a bit less structured with a touch of flirtiness," says Ortiz, "and it no longer takes hours to recreate."

To fashion this hairstyle, Ortiz uses three styling tools: a medium size curling iron, hair clips, and hairspray. Start by creating a side part and spray each section of hair before curling with a hairspray like Redken Workforce 09 Flexible Volumizing Spray to add body and prevent frizz.

He then secures each curl to the scalp using hair clips. "By curling and pinning your hair until it's cooled you will have a much stronger curl to work with."

Once you've worked your way around the entire head, release the curls. With a fine-toothed comb simply create an "S" wave formation. Set the curl pattern by clipping and spray to maintain a soft and sexy style. Finish with a touch of polish by spritzing on a light shine mist or super strength finishing spray like Redken Forceful 23 to give curls hold and lockout humidity, recommends Palau.

Pair your luxe waves with menswear-inspired pieces like a tailored suit jacket, trousers, and platform oxford booties -- adding a feminine flair to the boy-meets-girl fall fashion trend. And if you're headed out for a night on the town, make a statement by smoothing on bold lipstick.

Finish the retro look with, jewellery and accessories or even an ultra feminine dress from our online shop .

Real spray-on clothes to hit the catwalk

Forget weaving and stitching clothes. A new material could be sprayed directly onto your body and have you ready to go out in minutes.
Particle engineer Paul Luckham and fashion designer Manel Torres from Imperial College London combined cotton fibres, polymers and a solvent to form a liquid that becomes a fabric when sprayed. The material can be built up in layers to create a garment of your desired thickness and can also be washed and worn again like conventional fabrics.
In addition to creating instant fashion, the technology could have a range of other uses – spray-on bandages, for instance. "It's a sterilised material coming from an aerosol can, and you can add drugs to it to help a wound heal faster," says Torres.
On Monday, a fashion show at Imperial will feature the first couture collection created with the material.
